ABOUT DR. CHRISTIE WHITBECK-LAZENBY

Dr. Christie Whitbeck is a transformative leader in education, recognized for nearly four decades of impactful work in public school systems across Texas. Most recently serving as Superintendent of Fort Bend ISD, the sixth-largest school district in the state, she has consistently delivered results through a blend of innovative thinking, strategic vision, and a commitment to student success. Dr. Whitbeck now brings her leadership expertise to Region 4 Education Service Center as a Leadership Development Coach, where she mentors and supports current and aspiring educational leaders across the state.

During her tenure at Fort Bend ISD, Dr. Whitbeck led the district through critical milestones, including surpassing 80,000 students in enrollment, navigating post-COVID school reopenings, and securing community support for a $1.26 billion bond and a VATRE to address teacher salaries and armed security. She also tackled a $47 million budget deficit, achieving a balanced budget in 2023 through disciplined financial planning and stakeholder engagement.

Prior to her work in Fort Bend ISD, Dr. Whitbeck served as Superintendent of Bryan ISD, where her leadership drove measurable improvements in student outcomes, including increased graduation rates and college, career, and military readiness. Her “2 Bonds, 1 Vision” initiative modernized district facilities and resources while maintaining fiscal responsibility, earning the trust and confidence of her community.

Throughout her career, Dr. Whitbeck has been a champion for innovation and inclusivity, spearheading programs like Bryan ISD’s Regional Career and Technology Center and the district-wide “Essential 8” character program, as well as Fort Bend ISD’s “Creating a Culture of Kindness.” Her leadership style is characterized by accessibility, collaboration, and a relentless focus on equity and opportunity for all.

Dr. Whitbeck has been recognized for her excellence in leadership with accolades such as the Texas Career Technical Education Champion of the Year award, the Outstanding Alumni Early Career Award from Texas A&M University, and a place among Houston’s Top 30 Influential Women in 2022.

Her deep roots in the Houston area include leadership roles as Deputy Superintendent of Fort Bend ISD, Assistant Superintendent of Academics in Alvin ISD, and principalships in Katy ISD, where she earned recognition for her innovative approaches to academic success. Beginning her career as a classroom teacher in Alief ISD, Dr. Whitbeck has dedicated her life to empowering students and educators through vision-driven leadership.

A summa cum laude graduate of Texas A&M University with a Ph.D. in public school administration, Dr. Whitbeck also holds a master’s degree in administration supervision from the University of Houston and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Missouri State University.

With a leadership philosophy rooted in the principle of “Bringing Out the Best in People,” inspired by a cherished book gifted by her grandmother, Dr. Whitbeck continues to be a beacon of inspiration. In her current role at Region 4 Education Service Center, she shares her experience and expertise with fellow educators, helping them shape the future of education for students across Texas.
